What a Registered Agent actually does

Oregon law requires every LLC to designate a Registered Agent, a person or company with a physical Oregon address, available during business hours to receive official correspondence on behalf of your LLC.

Your Registered Agent's address appears in the Oregon Secretary of State (SOS)'s public database, anyone can look it up. That's why most business owners don't use their home address.

The Registered Agent's primary job is to receive and forward, within 1 business day, anything addressed to your LLC. Especially time-sensitive items like a lawsuit (service of process) or a state notice. Missing one can have real consequences.

Important: Your Registered Agent must have a physical Oregon address, a P.O. box doesn't qualify. And someone must be available there during business hours, every business day. For most small business owners, a service like Wayfinder is the practical solution.

Yes. Oregon law requires every LLC to maintain a Registered Agent with a physical Oregon address at all times. If your LLC doesn't have one, or if your agent's address becomes invalid, your LLC risks falling out of good standing with the state, which can eventually lead to administrative dissolution.
Yes, as long as you have a physical Oregon address and are available there during all regular business hours. Most business owners choose not to for two reasons: practicality (you can't always be at a fixed address during business hours, and service of process at your front door is uncomfortable) and partial privacy (your home address ends up in the registered agent field of public SOS records).
